WEEK 6: Saving Money While You Shop For Fruits and Vegetables
Fresh, frozen canned and dried types all count toward incorporating more fruits and veggies into your diet. Here's how to get the most for your money.
Purchase fresh fruits and vegetables in season when they are less expensive. Summer is a great time to find local produce that's full of flavor!
Use fresh produce within a few days after shopping and use frozen and canned fruits and vegetables later in the week.
As you put groceries away, chop some fruits and vegetables and place in bags or storage containers. Keep them in the fridge within easy reach to grab for snacks and meals.
Look for store ads to buy fresh produce that's on sale that week. Some stores will email you a flyer every week.
Plan your weekly meals and snacks before you go shopping.
Think variety! Make a point to try a new fruit or vegetable each week.
Buy whole fruits and vegetables instead of pre-cut or packaged forms that then to be more expensive and can go bad quickly.
Consider frozen and canned if fresh is too expensive. Frozen and canned produce keeps longer than fresh.
Look for fruit packed in water or juice to avoid added sugar. Choose canned veggies that are low in sodium (or no added salt).
Consider generic or store brands instead of name brands. Store brands tend to cost less and have similar taste and nutrition.
If your budget allows, buy larger bags of frozen fruit and vegetables. They may be a better value and you can use what you need and keep the rest for later.
Use canned or dried beans instead of more expensive meat in recipes. Many recipes made with meat – chilis, soups, Mexican dishes – can be made with beams and vegetables instead.
