Why stretch? What are the benefits?

checkboxWhy should I stretch? Stretching is an important part of any active lifestyle. Essentially, stretching gives you the flexibility to do the things you need and like to do, says The National Institutes of Health.

What are the benefits of stretching? The Mayo Clinic sums them up:

checkboxStretching relieves stress.  Stretching relaxes the tense muscles that often accompany stress, particularly in the neck and shoulders.  Stress stretches can often be done discreetly right at your desk.

checkboxcheckboxStretching increases your flexibility. When your muscles are flexible, tasks such as lifting grocery bags or bending to tie your shoes become easier.

checkboxStretching improves the range of motion of your joints. Good range of motion improves your balance, which will help keep you mobile and less prone to falls and their related injuries (especially as you age).

checkboxStretching improves your circulation. Did you know that stretching increase the flow of blood to your muscles? Better circulation can help you recover from a muscle injury.

REMEMBER, STRETCHING SHOULD NOT HURT. If you do stretching exercises, you will make progress toward greater flexibility. Stretching, however, should never hurt. It may feel slightly uncomfortable, but not painful. Push yourself to stretch farther, but not so much that it hurts, says The National Institutes of Health.
